What is Baby Bottle Tooth Decay?

Baby bottle tooth decay is the tooth decay that occurs in young children who are bottle feeding. How is this even possible? It is a common occurrence to the babies who are bottle feeding than those who are naturally breast feeding. It is common for a bottle fed baby because of the sugar that is added to the fluids like milk that are fed through the bottle.

How to Prevent Baby Bottle Tooth Decay

Despite the development of the baby bottle tooth decay on the young one’s one can try their best in order to prevent them from occurring. As the saying goes prevention is better than cure. It is better to prevent the tooth decay from occurring than to treat them after they have already occurred. The following are the methods of preventing this form of tooth decay.

Give Water in Between Meals
There are some children who prefer to take sugary fluids instead of water. The care taker should give them cool water instead. This is a natural method of reducing the desire for sugary fluids and still at the same time end up filling the stomach. The child also ends up taking a lot of water which is a healthy behavior in which one’s body is hydrated at all times.

Do Not Allow the Bottle in the Mouth for Long Periods
The feeding bottle should only be allowed in the baby’s mouth only during feeding. When it is not feeding time, the bottle should not be allowed with the baby in the mouth. The baby should not be allowed to sleep with the feeding bottle in their mouth. The feeding bottle with sugary milk or fruit juices can increase the rate of corroding the teeth.

Introduce the Child to A Cup As they Grow
As the child progresses in age they should be introduced to feeding with a cup. This allows them to minimize the rate of cavities caused by the sugary fluid. When the baby takes their fluids with a cup the fluid is swallowed faster than when one uses the feeding bottle. With a cup, there is minimal chances of getting into contact with the teeth.

Regular Visit to The Dentist
The parents should ensure that they take their children to a dentist. The dentist will help them to confirm the growth of the teeth. They can detect any abnormality and ensure that the baby teeth are in good condition. They can also detect any cavity early enough and advise on their prevention. They are also in a good position to advise the parents and guardians on how to take care of their baby’s teeth. One should ensure that they take the baby for dental visit or checkup at least once in a year.
